The certificate is real. Someone official said you’re a coach now.
For about 48 hours, that feels incredible. Then a quieter feeling moves in, usually somewhere around 2 AM: there is so much to do, and I have no idea what to do first.
Website. Logo. Instagram. Niche. Business cards? Do people still do business cards? An LLC, probably. A funnel — someone in your certification group keeps saying you need a funnel. Seventeen browser tabs later, you’ve researched everything and started nothing.
We watch this happen to smart, capable, deeply motivated coaches every single week. Not because anything is wrong with them. Because “start a business” arrives as one giant blob instead of a sequence. Decision fatigue does the rest.
So let’s un-blob it. Here are the five things worth doing in your first weeks as a certified coach — and the pile of things you have full permission to ignore for now.
First, the 20 things you can cheerfully ignore
A logo you love. Perfect brand colors. A niche statement that survives every dinner-party interrogation. A funnel. A podcast. SEO. Business cards. A content calendar. Reels. A course. A book. A second certification. Custom fonts. A tagline. An office. New headshots (your phone is fine for now). A newsletter. Ads. A five-year plan. And rewriting your bio for the ninth time.
None of these are bad. All of them are later. Every one of them can quietly become a very productive-feeling way to avoid the scarier, simpler work below.
(Don’t worry – the funnel people will find you…stay strong.)
The 5 things actually worth doing first
1. Tell five people you’re a coach.
Out loud. This week. Not an announcement post — five actual humans: a friend, your sister, the neighbor who always asks what you’re up to.
Here’s why this comes before any website: coaching is a know-like-trust profession. Your first clients will come from people who know you, or people they mention you to. The words “I’m a life coach now, and I’m taking clients” spoken to five people will do more for your business this month than any homepage. We build websites for a living, and we’re telling you this. It’s that true.
2. Set up one way to book you.
One free scheduling link (Calendly or similar). One service: a discovery conversation. Thirty or forty-five minutes.
The moment matters more than the tool. When someone says “I’d love to hear more,” you say “here’s my calendar” instead of “um, let me figure something out and text you.” That’s the difference between momentum and a missed moment.
3. Write your two-sentence bio.
Not your life story. Two sentences: who you help, and what changes for them. “I help women in their second act rediscover what they’d love — and build the confidence to go get it.” Done is the standard here, not deathless prose.
You’ll revise it a hundred times over your career. Every coach does. (Ours took eleven tries and at one point contained the word “synergize.” We don’t like to talk about it.) Version one just needs to exist.
4. Claim your domain name.
Your own name is usually the right answer — janesmith.com outlives every niche pivot you’ll ever make. Ten minutes, twenty dollars a year, and nobody else can take it. You don’t have to build anything on it yet. Think of it as reserving the land.
5. Have one real conversation.
Offer a free discovery session to one person from step one, or to whoever they thought of when you told them. Not to practice. For real. Because here’s what we’ve seen over and over: confidence doesn’t arrive before the first conversation. It arrives from it.
Notice what’s NOT on the list
The website. And we’re a website company. (Yes, we just talked you out of our own product for a few weeks. We’ll be fine.)
The website matters — a lot, actually, just later and for a different reason than most new coaches think. Nobody will find you through it at first. But the moment someone hears about you from a friend, they will look you up before they book. Your website is where a warm referral decides you’re the real deal. It’s a trust-confirmer, not a client-finder.
Which means it belongs in your sequence right after there are people out there hearing your name. Steps one through five create those people.
The whole philosophy in one line
There’s a principle from the Brave Thinking world that we’ve watched prove itself hundreds of times: Inspiration without action is merely entertainment.
So don’t file this article away in the “helpful things I read” folder. Pick one of the five. The one that made your stomach flip a little is probably the one. Do it today.
And when you get to the website step, we made you a map: the free Coach Website Launch Roadmap covers every step from template to launch day, in order, with honest time estimates. Grab it at LifeCoachElevate.com/welcome
One step at a time. We’ll help with the ones after that.
